The Gas Face

3rd Bass · 1989
Recording

Recorded for 3rd Bass’s debut album The Cactus Album and produced by Prince Paul. AllMusic lists Chung King Recording Studio in New York, New York as the album’s recording location, and the track features Zev Love X of KMD in his recording debut. Released on Def Jam in 1989, the single became 3rd Bass’s best-known early hit and a minor success in the UK, where it reached No. 71. It also drew attention for its sharp, humorous disses and for helping push the album’s MTV presence. The song is still remembered as 3rd Bass’s signature track and as MF DOOM’s first recorded appearance under the Zev Love X name. It remains a touchstone of early-1990s underground hip-hop and a recurring reference point in later retrospectives on Prince Paul and KMD.
