Recording

Recorded for Albino Gorilla's 1970 album Detroit 1984, a collection of Motown interpretations connected by instrumental interludes. Tom Wilson produced the recording, which reworked the Temptations song written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong. The track closed the original album with an extended reinterpretation of the Temptations' 1970 recording. Its spacious arrangement later attracted particular attention from hip-hop producers. The recording became Albino Gorilla's most widely sampled track, supplying material to recordings by A Tribe Called Quest, Pete Rock and J Dilla. This sampling history gave the otherwise obscure album a lasting presence in hip-hop production culture.
