This Is Soul

Paul Nero · 1968
Recording

Recorded for the 1968 album Nero's Soul Party, the track features Klaus Doldinger performing under his Paul Nero alias. Wolfgang Paap plays drums, Lothar Meid bass, Siegfried Schwab guitar and Ingfried Hoffmann organ, with production by Siegfried E. Loch. The piece introduced an album of linked arrangements drawing heavily on the Stax and Atlantic catalogues. Its spoken introduction builds the ensemble instrument by instrument, echoing King Curtis's Memphis Soul Stew. Its opening drum break attracted record collectors, while its inclusion as the opening track on The In-Kraut Vol. 2 in 2006 brought renewed attention to Doldinger's Paul Nero recordings.
