James Brown · 1972
Recording

Recorded on May 9, 1972, at Soundcraft Studios in North Augusta, South Carolina, with James Brown on lead vocals and organ, backed by the J.B.'s. The session featured Fred Thomas on bass, John 'Jabo' Starks on drums, Hearlon 'Cheese' Martin and Bobby Roach on guitars, Fred Wesley on trombone, St. Clair Pinckney on tenor saxophone, Jimmy Parker on alto saxophone, and Russell Crimes and Ike Oakley on trumpets. Released in July 1972 on Polydor Records as a two-part single, 'Get on the Good Foot' reached number one on Billboard's Best Selling Soul Singles chart for four weeks and number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100. Co-written by James Brown, Fred Wesley and Joseph Mims, the recording became a million-selling hit and reinforced Brown's position as a leading figure in American popular music. The recording became one of James Brown's signature dance records, with its interlocking guitar patterns, driving bassline and tightly arranged horns influencing subsequent generations of musicians and producers. It remains a staple of Brown's greatest-hits collections and an enduring example of his rhythm-centred approach to arranging and recording.
