The Lovomaniacs (sex)
BOOBIE KNIGHT AN THE UNIVERSAL LADY · 1974Recorded for the 1974 album Earth Creature, 'The Lovomaniacs (Sex)' was performed by Boobie Knight & The Universal Lady, the ensemble Knight formed after his earlier group, the Soulciety. The group featured vocalist and trumpeter Al Johnson alongside Knight and a large instrumental lineup, with arrangements by Knight and production by Alonzo Tucker. Released in 1974 on Dakar Records, 'The Lovomaniacs' combined insistent rhythms, prominent bass, heavy guitar and vocal interplay into one of the most distinctive recordings on Earth Creature. The track exemplified the experimental arrangements of Knight's second album, which subsequently became a sought-after collectors' record. The recording became a recognised breakbeat through its inclusion in the Ultimate Breaks & Beats compilation series and its use as a sampling source by hip-hop producers. Its rhythmic passages have been sampled by artists including Grandmaster Flash, Kool G Rap and DJ Shadow, while renewed collector interest led to subsequent reissues of Earth Creature, including a remastered vinyl edition in 2024.
