If This Is Love

The Precisions · 1967
Recording

The Precisions recorded the single at United Sound Systems in Detroit, with Mike Terry handling the string arrangement. The release paired the group with Detroit songwriters Michael Valvano, Marty Coleman, and Charles "Cholly" Bassoline. Issued on Drew in 1967, the track became the group's breakout record and a standout Detroit soul single. It reached No. 60 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 26 on the R&B chart, later becoming a Northern Soul favorite. The record remained the group’s best-known song and a durable Northern Soul classic. Its dramatic arrangement and emotional lead vocal kept it in circulation through later reissues, covers, and club play.
