Recording

Shirley Ellis recorded “Soul Time” for Columbia in 1967, with Charlie Calello credited as both producer and arranger on the original single. The B-side was “Waitin’,” from the same Columbia 4-44021 release. The single was a minor Billboard Hot 100 hit in 1967, peaking at No. 67 and spending six weeks on the chart. It became a favorite on the Northern soul circuit and is remembered as one of Ellis’s late-career Columbia releases. “Soul Time” retained a long afterlife through Northern soul culture and later sampling. The track was sampled by the British group the Go! Team.
