Marvin Gaye · 1967Recording
Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell recorded the track during their first session together in December 1966 at Hitsville U.S.A. in Detroit. Harvey Fuqua and Johnny Bristol produced the original recording for Tamla. The song introduced Gaye and Terrell as one of Motown’s defining duet teams and became their first major hit together. It reached No. 19 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 3 on the R&B chart. The recording was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999 and remains the signature Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell duet. Its enduring status has kept it in circulation through later covers, tributes, and film and television use.
