It's The Same Old Song
Four Tops · 1965Recording
Recorded at Hitsville U.S.A. (Studio A) in Detroit with the Four Tops and Motown’s house band, the Funk Brothers. Brian Holland and Lamont Dozier directed the session, and the vocal parts were completed quickly in response to a competing Columbia reissue. Released by Motown in 1965, the track was the Four Tops’ follow-up to the group’s first No. 1 hit, “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch).” It quickly became another major Motown pop and R&B hit and helped extend the group’s mid-1960s run at the center of the label’s sound. The song remained one of the Four Tops’ best-known records and a durable Motown standard. It has been widely covered and repeatedly cited as a classic example of the Holland-Dozier-Holland era.
