Baby I Need Your Loving
Four Tops · 1964Recorded on July 8, 1964 at Hitsville U.S.A. Studio A in Detroit, with the Four Tops fronted by Levi Stubbs and backed by Motown personnel including the Funk Brothers and the Andantes. Holland-Dozier-Holland handled the production and the string arrangement came from Gil Askey. The song was the Four Tops’ first Motown single and their first pop breakthrough, reaching No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and becoming their first million-selling hit. It announced the group as one of Motown’s major new acts in 1964. It remained one of the group’s signature records and was later covered successfully by Johnny Rivers, whose version reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song has also been widely reinterpreted by later artists, helping keep it in the Motown canon.
