Reach Out, I'll Be There
Four Tops · 1966Recording
Recorded in July 1966 at Motown’s Studio A on West Grand Boulevard in Detroit, with Holland-Dozier-Holland working with the Four Tops and the Funk Brothers; the track also featured the Andantes on background vocals and a distinctive piccolo intro. Released in August 1966, the single became a transatlantic number one and pushed the Four Tops into a more experimental Motown sound. It became the group’s biggest hit and a defining record of the label’s 1960s peak. The song became the Four Tops’ signature record and a Motown standard, with numerous covers by artists including Petula Clark, Diana Ross, Gloria Gaynor, Michael Bolton, and Boyzone. It was inducted into the National Recording Registry in 2022.
