The Temptations · 1966
Recording

The Temptations cut "Get Ready" at Hitsville USA (Studio A) in Detroit on December 5, December 9, and December 29, 1965. Smokey Robinson produced the session, with Eddie Kendricks on lead vocals. Released as a Gordy single in 1966, the song became a No. 1 R&B hit and peaked at No. 29 on the Billboard Hot 100. It marked the last Temptations single produced by Smokey Robinson before Norman Whitfield took over as the group’s main producer. "Get Ready" endured as one of the group’s signature records and a key Motown crossover single. It was widely covered, most notably by Rare Earth, whose later hit version kept the song in circulation for new audiences.
