Robert Parker · 1966
Recording

Recorded in 1966 in New Orleans at Cosimo Matassa’s Governor Nicholls Street studio, with Robert Parker working under the guidance of producer Wardell Quezergue. It came from the New Orleans Nola Records orbit that Matassa helped distribute and promote. The single became Robert Parker’s signature hit and Nola Records’ biggest national success, reaching No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 2 on the R&B chart. It helped define the mid-1960s New Orleans R&B sound on a national scale. The song remained a New Orleans standard, was widely covered, and has circulated in later reissues and media references. Its place in the city’s popular-music history is reinforced by continuing documentation of Cosimo Matassa’s 1966 hits and Parker’s enduring association with the track.
