I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)

The Four Tops · 1965
Recording

Recorded in 1965 at Hitsville U.S.A. (Studio A) in Detroit, with Levi Stubbs on lead vocals, the other Four Tops plus the Andantes on backing vocals, and instrumentation by the Funk Brothers with string support from the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. It became the Four Tops’ first No. 1 pop hit and one of Motown’s defining releases, topping Billboard’s Hot 100 for two non-consecutive weeks and R&B for nine weeks. Billboard ranked it among the year’s biggest singles, and contemporary trade reviews praised its driving, fast-paced feel. The track remains one of the best-known Motown records of the 1960s, with a long afterlife through extensive cover versions and repeated use in film and advertising. Rolling Stone later placed it on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
