The Skatalites · 1965
Recording

Recorded in Kingston in 1965 at Studio One for Clement “Coxsone” Dodd, with Roland Alphonso taking the lead over the Skatalites’ house-band rhythm section. The release drew on the band’s signature ska reworking of Dimitri Tiomkin and Paul Francis Webster’s film theme. It became the Skatalites’ defining crossover record and their only UK Top 40 hit, peaking at No. 36. The single introduced a wide audience to the group’s fast, horn-driven Studio One sound. The track remains one of the best-known Jamaican ska instrumentals and a fixture on Skatalites compilations. Its melody and arrangement have stayed in circulation through reissues, revival-era performances, and later covers.
