Nowhere To Run

Nowhere To Run

Martha Reeves & The Vandellas · 1965
Recording

Recorded on October 21, 1964, at Hitsville U.S.A. in Studio A, Detroit, with the Funk Brothers and the Holland-Dozier-Holland team shaping the backing track. Martha Reeves and the Vandellas later completed the vocal in the same Motown session cycle. Released as a 1965 Gordy single, it became one of the group’s signature records and a Top 10 pop hit, reaching No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 5 on the R&B chart. Its driving Motown arrangement helped define the group’s harder, more urgent sound. The song has remained a Motown staple, widely associated with sports arenas, oldies radio, and the group’s enduring reputation. Its Mustang-plant film performance and later covers kept it visible long after the original release.
