Skaravan
The Skatalites · 2000Recorded in November 1964 at Studio One in Kingston, Jamaica, during the all-night Skatalites session organized by Justin Yap and Ivan Yap. The track is the album’s ska reworking of Duke Ellington and Juan Tizol’s "Caravan." It appeared on one of the key instrumental ska albums of the era, capturing the Skatalites at their peak just before the group’s original run ended. The arrangement turned a jazz standard into a fierce Kingston ska showcase and became one of the record’s standout cuts. Skaravan remained a durable example of the Skatalites’ ability to translate jazz material into ska, and it has stayed in circulation through reissues and later compilations. Its title reading of "Caravan" has continued to anchor the track in ska canon and cover-version culture.
