Dr. Dre · 2000
Recording

Recorded in Los Angeles during a late-night session at A&M Studios, with Scott Storch creating the keyboard figure and Mel-Man contributing the drum programming. Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg finished the track as the lead single from 2001. Released as Dre’s comeback single, it announced his return after a long gap and helped define the sound and commercial identity of 2001. The track became one of the album’s signature songs and one of the best-known entries in Dre’s catalog. The song became a durable West Coast hip-hop anthem and one of Dre’s most recognizable recordings. Its opening piano line and hook have remained widely referenced in popular culture, including performances, memes, and later sampling and interpolation.
