The Word
The Beatles · 1965The Beatles recorded “The Word” on 10 November 1965 at EMI Studios in London during the final phase of the Rubber Soul sessions. John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote the song, George Martin produced the recording and played harmonium, with Norman Smith engineering the session. Released by Parlophone in 1965 on Rubber Soul, it marked one of the Beatles’ earliest uses of love as an abstract social and spiritual idea rather than a romantic subject. Its clipped groove, close harmonies and concise lyric pointed toward the broader utopian language that would become central to the band’s later psychedelic period. The track remains a key Rubber Soul album cut and an early sign of the Beatles’ transition from beat-group songwriting into more conceptual pop. Its emphasis on love as a universal principle anticipated the themes later crystallised in songs such as “All You Need Is Love”.
