Road Runner
Jr. Walker & the All Stars · 1965Recording
Recorded in Detroit in 1965 as a Motown session for Jr. Walker & The All Stars, with Holland–Dozier–Holland at the writing/production helm and Funk Brothers personnel on the backing track. The single was issued in 1966 on the Soul label. It was the title track of the 1966 Road Runner album and a major follow-up hit for Jr. Walker & The All Stars after "Shotgun." It reached the Top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 and the Top 5 on the U.S. R&B chart. The song remained part of the group’s signature Motown catalog and was later covered by artists including Fleetwood Mac, Humble Pie, Peter Frampton, and James Taylor. Its enduring reach comes from its hard-driving sax-led arrangement and its status as one of the group’s best-known recordings.
