Love Child

Love Child

Diana Ross/The Supremes · 1968
Recording

Recorded at Hitsville U.S.A. Studio A in Detroit on September 17, 19, and 20, 1968. The single was assembled by Motown’s Clan team, with Diana Ross on lead vocals and support from the group’s Motown session players. It became a major late-1968 Supremes comeback single and a U.S. number-one hit, topping the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks. Its frank subject matter and modern Motown production marked a sharp turn from the group’s earlier sound. The track remains one of the Supremes’ signature records and a defining Motown single of the late 1960s. It has stayed in circulation through covers, compilation appearances, and repeated recognition as the group’s highest-profile post-Holland-Dozier-Holland hit.
