Twenty Five Miles

Twenty Five Miles

Edwin Starr · 1969
Recording

Edwin Starr recorded the song in 1968 for Motown, with Johnny Bristol and Harvey Fuqua producing and co-writing it with Starr. The original single appeared on Gordy Records as the lead track from Starr’s 25 Miles album. The single became Starr’s first major crossover hit at Motown and reached the U.S. pop Top 10 in 1969. It established him as more than a former Ric-Tic act and set up the bigger breakthrough of “War” the following year. “Twenty-Five Miles” remained one of Starr’s signature records and a staple of soul and oldies programming. It has been covered, sampled, and repeatedly used in film, television, and advertising, keeping the song in circulation long after its release.
