Do I Love You

Do I Love You

Frank Wilson · 1965
Recording

Frank Wilson cut the song in Los Angeles in 1965 for Motown’s Soul subsidiary, with production credit shared by Hal Davis and Marc Gordon. The record was pressed for release and then pulled after Berry Gordy decided to shelve Wilson’s vocal version. The track became one of Motown’s great mysteries because it was prepared as a single but never properly released at the time. Its rarity and backstory made it a prized Northern Soul record in Britain and a cult object among collectors. Over time, the original recording became a Northern Soul anthem and one of the most coveted 45s in popular-music collecting. It has been repeatedly revived through reissues, bootlegs, and later covers, including Bruce Springsteen’s 2022 version.
