I Second That Emotion

Smokey Robinson & The Miracles · 1967
Recording

Recorded in 1967 at Hitsville U.S.A. in Detroit, with Smokey Robinson producing and co-writing with Al Cleveland. It was cut for Smokey Robinson & the Miracles during Motown’s peak period at the label’s original studio. Released as a Motown single in 1967, it became one of the Miracles’ major pop hits and a Top 5 Billboard success. It also confirmed the group’s continued chart strength after the name was billed as Smokey Robinson & the Miracles. The song remained one of the group’s signature records and has been widely covered, including a later hit version by Diana Ross & the Supremes and The Temptations. Its title phrase entered popular usage as one of Motown’s most recognizable hooks.
