Take Care of Business

Nina Simone · 1965
Recording

Recorded in New York City during the 1964 and 1965 sessions for I Put a Spell on You. Nina Simone performed vocals and piano, with Hal Mooney producing and arranging the album sessions. Written by Andrew Stroud, the track brought a playful and assertive mood to one of Simone's most pop-oriented albums. Its rhythmic vocal delivery contrasted with the album's more dramatic ballads and standards. The recording became a frequently sampled deep cut from Simone's Philips catalogue. Its vocal phrases and instrumental passages have been reused by later hip-hop artists and producers.
