And I Love Him

And I Love Him

Shirley Horn · 1965
Recording

Recorded at Bell Sound Studios in New York during sessions held on February 9 and October 19, 1965, for the album Travelin' Light. Shirley Horn sang and played piano with Kenny Burrell, Marshall Hawkins, Bernard Sweetney and a horn section under producer Johnny Pate. Horn recast the Lennon-McCartney composition from a female perspective as the closing track of Travelin' Light. The performance formed part of ABC-Paramount's effort to present her in a concise, orchestrated vocal setting. The recording remains a notable early jazz interpretation of a Beatles song and a distinctive example of Horn's mid-1960s work. It has continued to appear on reissues and compilations of her ABC-Paramount recordings.
