Live Medley: Ain't There Something Money Can't Buy
Young–Holt Unlimited · 1968This live medley version of 'Ain't There Something Money Can't Buy' was captured in performance by Eldee Young (bass), Isaac 'Red' Holt (drums), and Ken Chaney (piano), the lineup that defined Young-Holt Unlimited's late-1960s funk-inflected period on Brunswick Records in Chicago. The song, written by Red Holt and originally recorded for the 1968 Brunswick album Soulful Strut, showcased the trio's ability to weave soul-jazz originals into extended live medleys, a format central to their reputation as a visceral concert act on both the R&B and jazz circuits. The live medley format captured a side of Young-Holt Unlimited that their studio recordings rarely preserved, and its appearance on the 2015 Demon/Edsel retrospective Wack Wack: The Best of Young Holt introduced the track to a new generation of soul-jazz listeners.
