Blue Train

John Coltrane · 1957
Recording

Recorded on September 15, 1957 at Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, New Jersey, the session featured John Coltrane leading a sextet comprising Lee Morgan on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Kenny Drew on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums — Coltrane's only album as leader for Blue Note Records. Released in 1957, 'Blue Train' arrived at the peak of Coltrane's early hard bop period and demonstrated his compositional authority and his distinctive tenor saxophone sound, garnering immediate critical recognition as a major statement from an artist then still best known as a sideman. The album and its title track are regarded as cornerstones of the hard bop canon, studied and performed continuously since release; the composition has been covered by countless jazz ensembles and remains a standard in jazz education and performance worldwide.
