Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers · 1963
Recording

Recorded at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on March 22, 1963, with the Jazz Messengers lineup featuring Wayne Shorter on tenor saxophone, Lee Morgan on trumpet, Jymie Merritt on bass, and Art Blakey on drums. A propulsive hard bop standard that exemplifies the Jazz Messengers' collective compositional approach and establishes Shorter as a major voice in the group. The track's infectious rhythm and tight ensemble interplay made it a concert fixture and influenced the hard bop mainstream in the early 1960s. Remains central to hard bop canons and is frequently performed by ensembles exploring vintage Messengers material. The composition has been covered by numerous jazz artists and sampled in hip-hop, securing its place as a foundational post-bop reference point.
