President Kennedy
Roland Alphonso · 1963Recorded in Kingston, Jamaica, at Jamaica Recording Studio on Brentford Road for Clement "Coxsone" Dodd’s Studio One operation, with Roland Alphonso fronting the Skatalites-era house band on tenor saxophone. The tune belongs to the early-1960s Studio One ska run that began after Alphonso returned to Jamaica in 1963. It was a flagship Studio One ska instrumental built around the new Jamaican sound that Dodd and his musicians were defining in the early 1960s. The track is part of the original Ska Authentic repertory, one of the label’s key documents from that period. It remains one of Roland Alphonso’s signature Studio One tunes and continues to circulate on reissues and compilations such as Ska Authentic and Studio One Ska. Its continued presence in catalogues has kept it in the core canon of foundational Jamaican ska instrumentals.
