Jaipur

Joe Harriott & Amancio D’Silva Quartet · 1969
Recording

Recorded in February 1969 at Landsdowne Studios in London for Columbia’s SCX 6354 album Hum Dono. The session featured Joe Harriott on alto saxophone, Amancio D’Silva on guitar, Dave Green on bass, Bryan Spring on drums, with Ian Carr on flugelhorn and Norma Winstone on vocals. Jaipur was the closing track on a 1969 London session that linked Indian modal feeling with modern British jazz. The album was widely treated as a lost classic, and the track was singled out as a standout for its haunting, luminous quality. The track remains one of the best-known pieces from Hum Dono, an album later regarded as a holy-grail British jazz LP and Harriott’s final recording. Reissue-era criticism kept Jaipur in circulation as a signature example of Indo-jazz fusion and a highlight of D’Silva’s writing.
