Isaac Hayes · 1969Recording
Recorded at Ardent Studios in Memphis with the Bar-Kays and the Memphis Strings during the sessions for Isaac Hayes' landmark album Hot Buttered Soul. Hayes served as songwriter, arranger, producer and pianist, expanding soul music through extended, orchestral arrangements. The track exemplified Hayes' reinvention of soul music into a cinematic and groove-oriented form. Its lengthy instrumental passages and deep rhythm section helped establish a blueprint for 1970s funk and progressive soul. The recording became one of Hayes' most influential grooves and has been widely sampled by hip-hop producers. Its bass line, drum breaks and layered arrangement remain staples of crate-digging culture and sample-based music.
