Ike's Mood

Ike's Mood

Isaac Hayes · 1970
Recording

Recorded during the summer of 1970 for Isaac Hayes' album ...To Be Continued, Ike's Mood I was composed, arranged and produced by Hayes. The recording features Hayes on keyboards alongside bassist Cliff Acred, orchestral musicians and backing vocal group Hot, Buttered & Soul, with arrangements contributing to its layered instrumental sound. Released on Enterprise Records in November 1970, Ike's Mood I formed the instrumental introduction to Hayes' extended interpretation of You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'. Its delicate piano melody, expansive orchestration and gradual development demonstrated Hayes' innovative approach to composition at a time when he was redefining the possibilities of extended album recordings. Ike's Mood I became one of Isaac Hayes' most influential instrumental recordings through its extensive use in hip-hop production, particularly its distinctive piano melody. Its enduring recognition among producers and DJs helped establish the composition as a significant source of samples, extending Hayes' influence well beyond its original 1970 release.
