Give My Love to Rose

Give My Love to Rose

Johnny Cash · 1957
Recording

Recorded on 1 July 1957 at Sun Studio in Memphis, with Johnny Cash singing and playing acoustic guitar, Luther Perkins on electric guitar, and Marshall Grant on bass. Jack Clement produced the Sun recording. Released by Sun Records in 1957 as the B-side to Home of the Blues, Give My Love to Rose reached number 13 on the Billboard country chart. It showed Cash developing his prison-ballad storytelling within the stark Tennessee Two sound. Cash returned to the song repeatedly across his career, including versions for At Folsom Prison and American IV: The Man Comes Around. The 2002 recording won him the Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance.
