Personal Jesus

Johnny Cash · 2002
Recording

Recorded in 2002 for American IV: The Man Comes Around, with Rick Rubin producing and John Carter Cash and David Ferguson handling the sessions. The performance was cut at Cash Cabin Studio in Nashville and at Akademie Mathematique of Philosophical Sound Research in Los Angeles. Johnny Cash turned Depeche Mode’s synth-pop song into a stark, weathered acoustic cover for his late-career American series. Released as part of American IV and later paired with “Hurt” on single release, it showed how completely Cash could reframe contemporary songs in his own voice. The recording became one of Cash’s best-known late covers and a durable example of his American Recordings-era reinvention. It remains a frequent reference point whenever artists recast modern pop songs as stripped-down country-blues.
