Walk Tall / Mercy, Mercy, Mercy
Cannonball Adderley · 1975Recorded live at the Cannonball Adderley Quintet's performances in the early 1970s, the tracks united two of Adderley's signature pieces — Joe Zawinul's 'Mercy, Mercy, Mercy' and Adderley's own blues-gospel vehicle 'Walk Tall' — as a paired release on Capitol Records. The coupling presented two emblematic sides of Adderley's appeal: the accessible soul-jazz of 'Mercy, Mercy, Mercy', which had been a crossover hit in 1967, alongside the harder-grooving 'Walk Tall', reinforcing his standing as a bridge between jazz tradition and Black popular music. 'Mercy, Mercy, Mercy' in particular became one of the most recognised soul-jazz compositions of the era, covered and sampled widely across soul, hip-hop, and jazz contexts, and the pairing encapsulates Adderley's enduring influence on jazz's relationship with gospel and funk.
