The Fatback Band · 1975
Recording

Recorded by The Fatback Band during the mid-1970s period when the group was refining its dance-floor-oriented sound under the leadership of bassist and bandleader Bill Curtis. The session featured the band's signature combination of heavy rhythm section grooves, horns and call-and-response vocals. Released in 1975, the single became one of the group's most successful recordings and a major R&B hit. Its infectious chant, driving beat and club-friendly arrangement helped strengthen the band's reputation as a leading force in funk and dance music. The track became a popular source for hip-hop sampling and remains a staple of rare-groove and funk compilations. Its groove-oriented approach anticipated elements that later became central to disco, rap and dance music production.
