Recording

The track was recorded for Nina Simone Baltimore album during sessions at Studio Katy in Brussels. Creed Taylor produced the recording, with Dave Matthews arranging the Randy Newman song for Simone CTI release. Released in 1978 as the title track of Baltimore, it placed Simone within CTI late 1970s studio production after several years away from regular recording. The song became the album defining performance despite limited chart impact at release. It remains one of Simone most celebrated late period recordings and one of the best known interpretations of a Randy Newman song. Later use in film, television and compilations kept the recording prominent beyond its original CTI release.
