Put It on the Line

Lyn Collins · 1975
Recording

Recorded for Lyn Collins’s 1975 second studio album Check Me Out If You Don’t Know Me by Now, with James Brown producing and Dave Matthews arranging. The track was issued on People Records. A standout cut from Collins’s second album, it showed her forceful Southern soul delivery on a James Brown-produced set that mixed originals with sharply chosen covers. The song has also been noted for being sampled extensively in later hip-hop and dance records. Its horn-heavy groove and vocal hook helped make it one of Collins’s most sampled recordings, with dozens of later uses across hip-hop and club music. The track remains a recurring source for producers digging into James Brown’s 1970s funk catalog.
