China Girl
David Bowie · 1983Recorded in late 1982 at the Power Station in New York during the Let's Dance sessions, with Nile Rodgers producing alongside David Bowie. The recording featured Rodgers on guitar, Carmine Rojas on bass, Omar Hakim and Tony Thompson on drums, Robert Sabino on keyboards, and Stevie Ray Vaughan on lead guitar. Released by EMI America in 1983 as the second single from Let's Dance, China Girl became one of Bowie's biggest hits of the early 1980s. The song also brought wider attention and royalties to Iggy Pop, who had co-written and first released it in 1977. Bowie's version remains the best-known recording of China Girl and a defining single from his commercial breakthrough with Let's Dance. Its David Mallet-directed video became one of the most visible music videos of Bowie's MTV-era career.
