I Can't Stand the Rain

I Can't Stand the Rain

Ann Peebles · 1973
Recording

Recorded in Memphis at Royal Recording Studios with Willie Mitchell producing. The session featured the Hi Records house players and was cut for Hi Records in 1973. The track became Ann Peebles’ signature hit and her biggest crossover success, reaching No. 38 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and No. 6 on the R&B chart. It also gave her the UK singles chart, where it peaked at No. 41. The song remained a durable soul standard through widely known cover versions and later sampling, especially in dance and pop contexts. Its opening groove and vocal performance kept it in circulation well beyond its original release.
