The Last Time

The Last Time

Andrew Oldham Orchestra · 1966
Recording

The track was recorded by the Andrew Oldham Orchestra as an orchestral version of the Rolling Stones song The Last Time. Andrew Loog Oldham produced the recording, with David Whitaker arranging the strings for the Rolling Stones Songbook project. Released on The Rolling Stones Songbook in 1966, it recast Rolling Stones material in a lush orchestral style associated with Oldham studio experiments. The recording later became far more famous when its string arrangement was sampled for the Verve Bitter Sweet Symphony. It remains the Andrew Oldham Orchestra best known recording because of its central role in the Bitter Sweet Symphony sampling dispute. The track is now a key example of how 1960s orchestral pop arrangements entered later sample based rock and pop culture.
