Bitter Sweet Symphony

The Verve · 1997
Recording

The track was recorded for Urban Hymns with Richard Ashcroft, Nick McCabe, Simon Jones and Peter Salisbury. The recording was built around a licensed sample of the Andrew Oldham Orchestra version of The Last Time, with Youth and the Verve producing. Released as a single in 1997, it became the Verve breakthrough international hit and one of the defining records of the Urban Hymns campaign. The single reached number 2 on the UK Singles Chart and number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. It remains the Verve signature song and one of the most recognizable British singles of the 1990s. The long running dispute over the Rolling Stones related sample ended in 2019 when songwriting royalties were returned to Richard Ashcroft.
