See Emily Play
Pink Floyd · 1967Pink Floyd recorded “See Emily Play” in May 1967 at Sound Techniques in London, shortly after their first single “Arnold Layne”. Syd Barrett wrote the song, Norman Smith produced the session, and the recording featured Richard Wright’s Farfisa organ, piano and electric-harpsichord textures alongside Barrett’s lead vocal and guitar. Released by Columbia in 1967 as Pink Floyd’s second single, it reached number 6 on the UK Official Singles Chart and became the group’s first major hit. Its nursery-rhyme melody, studio effects and compressed psychedelic pop sound made it one of the defining British psychedelic singles of 1967. The track remains one of Syd Barrett’s signature compositions and a central document of Pink Floyd’s early London underground period. Its later compilation presence and cover versions have kept it among the band’s most recognised pre-progressive-era recordings.
