It was cut in Detroit at Golden World Studio with the Funk Brothers moonlighting from Motown, then overdubbed at Mercury’s studio in New York. Robert Bateman said he added the “orchestra” there, using two violinists to build the final sound. The track was issued in December 1966 on HIB Records as the B-side instrumental version of “If It’s All The Same To You Babe.” It quickly became a Northern Soul favorite and a St. Louis radio pick hit, helping establish the record’s reputation far beyond its original local run. It remains a Northern Soul classic and a sought-after rare soul side. It has continued to circulate on reissues and compilations, including Northern Soul-focused releases and soundtrack usage.
