Mary Jane

Rick James · 1978
Recording

Recorded in 1978 at Cross-Eyed Bear Studios in Clarence, New York, and at the Record Plant in New York City. It was cut with Rick James, Art Stewart, and the Stone City Band. Released as the second single from Come Get It!, it became one of Rick James’s breakout songs and helped establish his Motown-era sound. It also drove the parent album’s success and became one of his signature early records. The song became a lasting funk standard and has remained widely recognized through later sampling and references. Its most prominent modern reuse is in Kendrick Lamar’s “DNA.”
