Say No Go
De La Soul · 1988Recorded in 1988 for 3 Feet High and Rising at Calliope in New York City and Island Media in West Babylon, the track was produced by Prince Paul and De La Soul. It built an anti drug single around layered sample collage and the Hall and Oates phrase I Cant Go for That. Released by Tommy Boy in 1989, Say No Go reached number 18 on the UK Official Singles Chart and number 32 on the US Hot Black Singles chart. It showed De La Soul turning playful sampledelic production into a direct response to the crack era. The record remains one of the key singles from 3 Feet High and Rising and a defining example of Prince Paul and De La Souls dense sample based production. Its anti drug hook and Hall and Oates flip kept it central to the albums long critical reputation.
