Phortune was DJ Pierre’s 1988 Chicago house alias, and “String Free” was issued as a Hot Mix 5/Hot Mix 5 Inc. 12-inch from that circle, with DJ Pierre credited in contemporaneous listings as the producer. It was mixed by DJ Pierre on later tracklists and retrospective compilations. Released in 1988, “String Free” stood out as a Chicago acid-house classic from the Hot Mix 5 era and was singled out in British club coverage as an important import record. Music writers and DJ histories have consistently grouped it with DJ Pierre’s defining early productions. The track has remained a recurring reference point in house-music compilations, re-edits, DJ sets, and later reissues, showing lasting status well beyond its original release. It is still treated as one of the signature early DJ Pierre/Phortune records.
