Me, Myself and I

De La Soul · 1989
Recording

Recorded with Prince Paul during the 3 Feet High and Rising sessions at Calliope Studios in New York. The single came from De La Soul’s debut album and reflected the group’s early collaboration with their producer. Released in 1989, the track became De La Soul’s breakthrough hit and a defining statement of the album’s playful, self-aware ‘Daisy Age’ image. It also gave the group their highest-profile mainstream exposure and became their most commercially successful single. The song remains De La Soul’s signature single and a touchstone of late-1980s alternative hip-hop. It is still cited for its influence on playful, sample-based rap and for the way it helped define the group’s identity.
