Dope on Plastic
Uptown · 1989Recording
Released in 1989 as the A-side of Uptown’s Tommy Boy 12-inch single “Dope on Plastic / It’s My Turn.” The vocal mix is credited to Uptown (Raie Dacosta), with CJ Moore and Dante Ross attached to the production and mix credits. “Dope on Plastic” emerged from late-1980s Tommy Boy rap and became the release’s signature track. It was notable for its dense sample construction and for introducing Uptown’s brash style through a club-ready 12-inch version. The track became a well-known source record in breakbeat and hip-hop production, with WhoSampled listing dozens of later uses, including The Prodigy’s “Weather Experience” and SL2’s “DJ’s Take Control.” That sampling footprint kept the record circulating well beyond its original release.
